The Boynton Beach Police Department’s Traffic Unit is a specialized, full-time assignment dedicated to promoting roadway safety, reducing traffic-related incidents, and enhancing overall public safety throughout the city. Operating under the direction of the Chief of Police, the unit oversees all traffic-related responsibilities, including the department’s Photo Enforcement Safety Program, and plays a key role in high-visibility campaigns such as Click It or Ticket and Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

Through a proactive, solution-oriented approach, the Traffic Unit combines enforcement, education, and collaboration to reduce injuries and fatalities on our roadways. Personnel work closely with partner agencies, city departments, and professional organizations, while also engaging the community through outreach events and educational presentations focused on safe driving practices.

The unit encompasses the Motor Unit, DUI Enforcement, and Public Safety Aides (PSAs), all working together to deliver comprehensive traffic services. Members of the unit also conduct follow-up investigations and serve as technical resources within the department on traffic-related matters.

The Motor Unit provides highly visible and proactive traffic enforcement throughout the city. Motorcycle officers are specially trained to address speeding, aggressive driving, and other hazardous violations that contribute to crashes. Their mobility allows for rapid response, effective enforcement in congested areas, and participation in escorts, special events, and community initiatives—all while serving as a visible deterrent to unsafe driving behaviors.

DUI officers are highly trained in the detection and enforcement of impaired driving laws. They conduct thorough investigations using standardized field sobriety exercises and established legal procedures, ensuring that each case is handled with precision and professionalism. Under Florida’s Implied Consent Law, drivers lawfully arrested for DUI are required to submit to chemical or physical testing to determine impairment.

DUI enforcement is a critical component of the unit’s mission, as impaired driving poses a significant risk to the community. Officers participate in proactive initiatives, including saturation patrols and specialized operations, and investigate traffic crashes ranging from minor incidents to serious bodily injury and fatal collisions. Advanced-level investigations are conducted by certified Traffic Homicide Investigators (THI), ensuring the highest level of expertise in complex cases.

Public Safety Aides are an integral part of the Traffic Unit, providing essential support in a wide range of non-hazardous law enforcement functions. PSAs assist with traffic control, respond to minor traffic crashes, document incidents, enforce parking regulations, and manage roadway hazards to ensure the safe and efficient flow of traffic.

In addition, PSAs handle animal-related calls for service, contribute to DUI enforcement operations and traffic initiatives, and assist with community-focused efforts. They also play a key role in administering the Photo Enforcement Safety Program and deploying traffic safety equipment such as speed awareness trailers and license plate reader (LPR) systems. Their contributions allow sworn officers to focus on more complex enforcement and investigative responsibilities.

The department’s Photo Enforcement Safety Program leverages technology to enhance roadway safety and deter dangerous driving behaviors, particularly in high-risk areas. By addressing violations such as red-light running and speeding, the program supports crash reduction efforts and promotes compliance with traffic laws. Managed in part by Public Safety Aides, this program reflects the department’s commitment to data-driven, innovative approaches to traffic safety.
