The Boynton Beach Police Department’s K-9 Unit is one of the most dynamic and specialized resources supporting our mission to protect and serve with excellence. Our K-9 Teams—each made up of a highly trained police dog and a certified handler—bring unmatched capability to searches, detection, and officer safety. Their superior senses, agility, and discipline allow them to locate suspects, and evidence faster and more safely than traditional methods. More than just working partners, our police dogs play a vital role in both our enforcement efforts and our connection with the community.

BBPD’s K-9 Unit is held to the highest national standards. Each team undergoes:

  • Extensive initial certification through state or nationally recognized canine training associations
  • A minimum of five hours of documented training every week
  • Annual proficiency evaluations by certified evaluators
  • Rigorous physical standards for handlers
  • Specialized scenario training in tracking, detection, tactical deployments, officer protection, and obedience

Our dogs live with their handlers, forming strong bonds that enhance trust, and performance in the field.

While our K-9s excel in police operations, they are also among the most beloved ambassadors of our department.

Our teams frequently participate in:

  • School and community demonstrations
  • Neighborhood meetings
  • City events and safety fairs and more.

These demonstrations are carefully planned to ensure public safety, and they highlight the skill, discipline, and heart of our police dogs. Whether it’s a K-9 surprising a local class with a friendly visit or showcasing a detection demonstration at a community event, our dogs play an important role in building trust and strengthening relationships.

Our K-9 vehicles are specially equipped to protect the health, safety, and comfort of our working dogs. Features include:

  • Advanced heat sensors that alert the handler and automatically lower windows if temperatures rise
  • Automatic door releases allowing handlers to deploy their K-9 quickly during emergencies
  • Specialized climate control systems
  • Secure transport enclosures
  • Equipment for training and mission readiness

Every detail—from vehicle tinting to ventilation—is designed to keep our K-9 partners safe.

Behind the scenes, the K-9 Unit follows strict procedures governing training aids, deployment documentation, emergency K-9 handling, and chain-of-custody requirements. The department maintains meticulous records, conducts routine audits, and ensures every handler follows established standards for safety and integrity.

The selection process for becoming a K-9 handler is one of the most challenging special-assignment processes in the department. Candidates undergo:

  • Physical fitness testing
  • Decoy and apprehension training
  • K-9 search proficiency
  • Multi-stage evaluations with K-9 Supervisors

Only the most capable, committed officers earn the privilege of serving as handlers.

The Boynton Beach Police Department’s K-9 Unit represents teamwork, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to public safety. Whether they are searching for a violent suspect, locating evidence, ensuring officer safety, or capturing the hearts of local students during a demonstration, our K-9s are a vital and cherished part of the Boynton Beach community.

They are more than police dogs—They are protectors, partners, and ambassadors for the safety and spirit of our city.
