The Boynton Beach Police Department’s Field Training Program is the essential bridge between the police academy and independent patrol duty. Every newly sworn officer—and newly appointed Reserve or Auxiliary officer—enters this program to gain the practical experience, coaching, and mentoring required to succeed in today’s complex law enforcement environment.

The goal is simple: develop confident, competent, ethical officers who reflect the Department’s values and can safely and effectively serve the community from day one.

What the Field Training Program Provides

The program pairs each trainee with a certified Field Training Officer (FTO) who provides daily instruction, real-time guidance, and structured evaluation. During the program, trainees learn how to apply academy concepts to real-world policing, while gaining familiarity with:

  • Department policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Safe patrol practices and officer survival principles
  • Legal standards and decision-making
  • Community engagement and problem-solving
  • Geography, high-risk locations, and patrol strategies
  • Report writing, investigations, and professional communication

By combining hands-on practice with mentorship, the FTO Program ensures officers build both technical skills and the judgment that professionalism demands.

How the Program Works

The Field Training Program is led by the Field Training Program Sergeant, who manages scheduling, documentation, lesson plans, program updates, and oversight of both trainees and FTOs. The program includes a structured, multi-phase training model designed to expose trainees to diverse coaching styles while maintaining consistent standards.

Role of Field Training Officers

Field Training Officers are carefully selected, highly experienced sworn members who have demonstrated strong communication, decision-making, leadership, and professional integrity. They must complete an advanced FTO certification course and maintain exemplary performance evaluations.

FTOs:

  • Teach trainees how to apply policies during real calls
  • Demonstrate safe driving and scene management
  • Coach on communication, radio procedures, and conflict resolution
  • Introduce trainees to the city’s geography and high-priority areas
  • Evaluate performance daily through structured reports
  • Gradually hand over responsibility as the trainee improves
  • Serve as mentors, role models, and front-line instructors

FTOs play a foundational role in shaping the Department’s future officers, and their influence often sets the tone for an officer’s entire career.

A Foundation for a Successful Career

The Field Training Program is more than orientation—it’s a structured, mentorship-driven experience that shapes the next generation of Boynton Beach Police officers.

Through guidance, evaluation, and real-world practice, the program ensures each new officer is:

  • Prepared to operate safely
  • Knowledgeable about the community they serve
  • Confident in their skills and decision-making
  • Committed to the Department’s professionalism and values

The result is not just officer readiness, but stronger policing, safer communities, and a shared standard of excellence across the agency.
