Detective Bureau Units

The Major Cases Unit investigates the most serious and high-profile crimes, including homicides, robberies, kidnappings, and critical incidents that demand immediate, intensive investigative response. Detectives in this unit often respond around the clock to major scenes, coordinating with forensic teams, prosecutors, and partner agencies.

Their efforts play a pivotal role in protecting public safety and bringing closure to victims and families.

Examples of their work include: reconstructing complex crime scenes, leading multi-agency investigations and utilizing advanced forensics technology to solve crimes.

The Special Victims Unit is dedicated to some of the most sensitive and emotionally challenging cases, including sexual assaults, crimes against children, domestic violence, and elder abuse. The SVU’s approach is trauma-informed, compassionate, and victim-centered.

Detectives work closely with advocacy groups, medical professionals, and social service partners to ensure victims receive the support they need. Their specialized training enables them to investigate these cases with care, professionalism, and discretion.

This unit frequently handles: Sexual battery investigations, child exploitation and abuse cases, domestic violence felonies and crimes involving vulnerable adults.

The Narcotics Investigations Unit focuses on combating illegal drug activity and its impact on the community. Through surveillance, undercover operations, and intelligence gathering, these detectives identify drug trafficking networks and work to dismantle criminal organizations.

Their work helps reduce overdoses, improve neighborhood safety, and disrupt the flow of illegal substances into the city.

The Property Crimes and Fraud Unit investigates a wide range of cases involving theft, burglary, identity theft, forgery, contractor fraud, credit card schemes, and other financial crimes. These cases often involve complex paper trails, digital forensics, and extensive interviews.

Detectives in this unit protect residents and businesses from significant financial harm and work closely with banks, retailers, and cybercrime experts to stop repeat offenders.

Examples of cases handled include: Residential and commercial burglaries, auto theft and vehicle break-ins, elder financial exploitation, and identity theft and online fraud schemes.

The Human Exploitation Unit is dedicated to identifying, investigating, and preventing crimes involving human trafficking, prostitution, and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. Working proactively and collaboratively, the unit targets offenders who profit from exploitation while prioritizing victim safety, dignity, and recovery.

Detectives assigned to the unit conduct both proactive and intelligence-led investigations, often in partnership with local, state, and federal agencies. They also work closely with victim advocacy organizations to connect survivors with critical services, including shelter, counseling, and long-term support.

Through enforcement, education, and community partnerships, the Human Exploitation Unit is committed to disrupting exploitation networks, holding offenders accountable, and protecting those most at risk.

The Real Time Crime Center serves as an intelligence hub within the Detective Bureau, supporting all investigative units with live data, video analytics, and rapidly deployed intelligence. Using real-time information such as drones, camera feeds, license plate recognition systems, crime pattern analysis, and digital evidence, RTCC staff provide detectives and patrol officers with immediate insights that enhance response times and investigative outcomes.

RTCC functions include: Monitoring live camera networks and public safety systems, providing instant intelligence to officers responding to crimes in progress, identifying suspects, vehicles, or crime trends in real time, and supporting major investigations with digital and analytical resources.

The RTCC is a powerful tool that increases efficiency, improves officer safety, and strengthens proactive policing efforts.

The Digital Forensics Unit provides specialized investigative support by collecting, preserving, and analyzing digital evidence in a wide range of criminal cases. From computers and mobile devices to cloud-based data and emerging technologies, the unit plays a critical role in uncovering and interpreting digital information that can support investigations and prosecutions.

Highly trained forensic examiners use industry-standard tools and methods to ensure evidence is handled with precision and in accordance with legal and evidentiary standards. The unit supports cases involving crimes such as fraud, internet-based offenses, violent crime, and human exploitation, often working in close coordination with detectives, prosecutors, and partner agencies.

Through technical expertise, continuous training, and a commitment to staying ahead of evolving technology, the Digital Forensics Unit enhances the department’s ability to solve crimes and deliver justice in an increasingly digital world.
