The Boynton Beach Police Department’s Public Information & Media Relations Unit plays a vital role in building trust, strengthening communication, and fostering transparency between the department and the community we serve. Acting as the central hub for all official communication, the unit ensures that accurate, timely, and ethical information is shared through traditional media, social media, and direct community outreach.

What We Do

The Public Information & Media Relations Unit manages the department’s full public information function, including:

  • Media Response: Public Information Officers (PIOs) respond to incidents—such as major crashes, community-wide emergencies, or significant police operations—to provide facts, correct misinformation, and ensure public awareness.
  • News Releases & Media Alerts: The unit prepares and distributes official statements, community safety messages, and updates on major cases. These releases help keep residents informed about emerging concerns, ongoing investigations, and the department’s proactive crime-prevention efforts.
  • Crisis Communication: During critical incidents—such as missing persons cases, severe weather events, or citywide emergencies—the unit delivers real-time information to maintain transparency and protect public safety.
  • Social Media Outreach: The Media Relations Unit manages and oversees the department’s social media platforms—sharing community highlights, crime prevention tips, feel-good stories, and behind-the-scenes features that humanize our officers and strengthen community connections.
While transparency is a core value, the Media Relations Unit upholds strict standards to protect the integrity of investigations and the privacy of victims and witnesses. Information is released responsibly, adhering to Marsy’s Law, Florida Public Records Law, and all legal requirements that safeguard sensitive details.

Community Outreach in Action

Beyond managing critical information, the Public Information & Media Relations Unit plays an active role in community education and engagement. Examples include:

  • Promoting Community Events: From National Night Out to Coffee with a Cop, the unit ensures that residents are aware of opportunities to meet officers, ask questions, and build meaningful relationships. The Public Information & Media Relations Unit also plans and coordinates a number of agency events, including Trunk or Treat with BBPD, Blue Lights & Holiday Nights, Cookout with the Cops, Fraud Outreach events, and more—each designed to strengthen community trust and connection.
  • Educational Outreach: Through media interviews, public service announcements, and community partnerships, the unit delivers important messages about scams, traffic safety, hurricane preparedness, and crime trends.
