The Police Explorer program provides youth
with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the police
profession and participate in community service activities,
improving the quality of life for all residents of Boynton
Beach. The program is for young men and women who have completed
the eighth grade and between the ages of 14 and 21.
Youth meet once a week and learn every
aspect of law enforcement from traffic stops and building
searches to handgun safety and the handling of critical
incidents. Participants of the program earn community services
hours to help them achieve their high school diplomas or college
degrees, but more importantly, they learn how to be good
citizens. The program has been around for more than 20 years and
thousands of youth have participated. Many have been influenced
to go into a career in law enforcement. In fact, several past
participants are now officers with the Boynton Beach Police
Department.
To become a Boynton Beach Police
Explorer, a student must:
Be enrolled in school and have at least a
"C" average
Be able to attend weekly meetings,
occasional weekend functions
Participate in para-military training that
includes physical activity
Not have an arrest record.
