Lt. Jeffrey Katz started his law enforcement career in 1989 with
the Plantation Police Department as a Police Cadet. Lt. Katz was
eventually hired by Plantation as a Community Service Officer
assigned to Communications. In 1994, Lt. Katz was hired by the
City of Parkland Public Safety Department as both a full-time
police officer and a professional fire fighter. He joined the
Boynton Beach Police Department in 1998.
Since joining the B.B.P.D, Lt. Katz has served as a road patrol
officer, recruiter, background investigator and high liability
instructor. He was promoted to sergeant in 2001. Initially, he
supervised a squad of officers on the road. Lt. Katz was
transferred to a variety of positions between 2002 and 2004;
serving as the Special Services Sergeant (who is responsible for
the department's K-9 corps, marine unit, crime prevention unit,
police athletic league, and special events coordination). He
also served as the Executive Officer to the Patrol Division
Commander and even spent some time revamping operations in the
department's Records Unit. In 2004, Lt. Katz was promoted to the
rank of Lieutenant whereupon he served as a Watch Commander in
Uniform Services.
In August of 2005, he was tapped by incoming Police Chief G.
Matthew Immler to serve as the department's Chief of Staff. In
this capacity, Lt. Katz is responsible for the following areas:
training, recruiting, internal affairs, media relations, grant
procurement, agency accreditation, staff inspections,
promotional assessments, public records fulfillment and
grievance coordination. Lt. Katz also spent several years
managing the department's hostage negotiation team.
Lt. Katz is a summa cum laude graduate of both Saint Leo
University, (where he earned his B.A. in Criminal Justice) and
the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business at Nova Southeastern
University (where he earned his M.S. in Leadership). Lt. Katz is
a graduate of the Southern Police Institute's Command Officer
Development Course and he holds an Executive Certificate in
Leadership and Management from the University of Notre Dame's
Mendoza College of Business. Lt. Katz is also an executive
education alumni of Harvard University's Kennedy School of
Government and he is currently pursuing his doctorate in
Organizational Psychology through Walden University.
