The JAM Unit was established to create
guidelines for youth under the supervision of the Florida
Department of Juvenile Justice. The unit targets "high risk"
juvenile offenders under supervision status. Officers hold
participants accountable to the sanctions ordered by the
juvenile court system.
Over 2,000 juveniles on probation in Palm
Beach County are being monitored by the Department of Juvenile
Justice. The JAM Unit is comprised of the Boynton Beach,
Greenacres, Lantana, Palms Springs, Riviera Beach and West Palm
Beach police departments and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's
Office.
The Boynton Beach Police Department has
two officers assigned to the JAM Unit. These officers routinely
check the home, school or workplace of every juvenile assigned
to the unit to ensure compliance with court-ordered sanctions.
They conduct random drug screens of the juveniles and perform
"casual and consensual" contacts with loitering juveniles to
determine if they are on probation. JAM officers are also
responsible for serving juvenile warrants. They employ a zero
tolerance approach, which means that immediate consequences will
be imposed for any violation of the court-ordered sanctions.
JAM officers are dedicated to providing
proactive enforcement through partnerships that build trust,
reduce crime and create a safe environment.
